El título ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’, es un tributo a Sergio Leone, de quien Tarantino es un enamorado… el título debe entenderse como un homenaje a ‘Once Upon a Time in The West’ (1968) y a ‘Once Upon a Time in América’ (1984), tituladas ‘Once Upon a Time in the West’ y ‘Once Upon a Time in America’ en Estados Unidos.

Since his transition to films didn’t work out, Rick Dalton is said to be contemplating going to Italy, which has become a hotbed for low-budget westerns. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the early 1960s, Italian westerns were filling a cinematic void created by Hollywood’s increase in westerns for television, although not receiving much recognition (not even in Europe), until an obscure director named Sergio Leone called upon Clint Eastwood in ’63 and gave Italian filmmakers a winning formula to follow – thus the «Spaghetti Western» was born. At the time, an American actor working in Italy was considered in Hollywood as taking a career step backward. It wasn’t until ’67, when the films were released in the states and became box-office hits, that it proved to be a viable option. For a generation enduring a war in Vietnam and rejecting their parents’ more wholesome entertainment, Leone’s desolate and unforgiving take on the American West felt ideal. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ To this day the Spaghetti Western remains one of Tarantino’s all time favorite cinematic sub-genres, and like many of his films, we can expect to see elements from it incorporated into Once Upon a Time in Hollywood… literally, as his characters inhabit a world in which the genre itself exists.

Quentin Tarantino’s next film is set to be a landmark entry into his filmography, a period piece exploring hippie culture and the Hollywood studio system in late 1960s LA.

Por otra parte, su colega Robert Rodriguez, al que cariñosamente llama el tonto del sombrero, ya realizó este homenaje a los títulos de Leone en ‘El mexicano’ (2003), ‘Once Upon a Time in Mexico’ en versión original.

Sinopsis de ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood takes place at the height of New Hollywood and the counter culture explosion of the 1960’s. New Hollywood refers to a movement when a generation of young filmmakers came to prominence in the United States, influencing the types of films produced, their production and marketing, and the way major studios approached film making. Due to the dwindling popularity of old fashioned big budget films, studios were looking to reinvent themselves. This opened the door to a counter-culture of writers and directors. Steve McQueen and Roman Polanski (both characters in the film) are regarded as important figures of the New Hollywood movement. In Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, writer-director Roman Polanski will be coming off of Rosemary’s Baby (1968), which was a box-office success and became his first Hollywood production, establishing his reputation as a major commercial filmmaker

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood casting: Dakota will play Lynette «Squeaky» Fromme, one of Charles Manson’s most trusted associates. Fromme lived with Manson and the family at Spahn Ranch, (home to numerous TV westerns productions, including Bonanza) where they worked for their keep. Manson persuaded George Spahn (Burt Reynolds) to permit the family to live there, and ordered the women to have sex with the then nearly blind 80-year-old. The women also acted as seeing eye guides for Spahn. Spahn nicknamed all the Manson girls, including Fromme, who was given the nickname Squeaky because of the sound she made when he touched her. Lynette Fromme had no hand in the infamous 1969 Tate-LaBianca murders orchestrated by Manson.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood features Tarantino’s most star studded ensemble cast. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ An ensemble cast is one in which there are multiple main characters, and each carries essentially the same importance for the story. Films that feature ensemble casts tend to emphasize the interconnectivity of the characters, even when the characters are complete strangers to one another. What makes them an ensemble is the fact that they are completely inter-related and all are necessary to make the piece complete. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tarantino has compared Once Upon A Time In Hollywood to Pulp Fiction, which featured arguably one of the most iconic ensemble casts of the modern era, one it would seem Tarantino is looking to top. The comparison to Pulp Fiction also begs the question of a possible non-linear storyline, or perhaps even a «Rashomon-style story.» ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ A Rashomon style story (taken from Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon, 1950) is where the same event is given multiple interpretations by the individuals involved, combined with the absence of evidence to figure out any version of the truth, plus the social pressure for closure on the question. The event in this case being, the murder of actress Sharon Tate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In the summer of 1969, newspapers began to speculate on the motives for the murders. People were convinced that the rich and famous of the community were in peril. Children were sent out of town, guards were hired, and rumors swirled. The murder of the Labianca’s just two days later was thought to be the work of a copycat killer. It wasn’t until the end of 1969 that Los Angeles Police were able to pin the crimes on the mystical, semi-religious hippie drug-and-murdering cult led by a bearded little man named Charles Manson.

C“I think the tone of it is – it’s difficult to describe because it’s very fresh, but it oscillates between humourous, serious, spooky; it’s playful. It’s not easily describable.»

Cinematographer Robert Richardson

OUATIH’s cast is one of the greatest and most eclectic ever assembled, involving everyone from Al Pacino to Lena Dunham, and involving portrayals of Hollywood figures like Roman Polanski and Bruce Lee. Principal photography began in Los Angeles, California on 18 June 2018 and wrapped on 1 November 2018.

Mike Moh will play Bruce Lee in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Moh is an American actor and a 5th degree black belt in American Taekwondo. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Bruce Lee got his start in Hollywood when he met celebrity-hair-sylist Jay Sebring in 1964. Sebring helped Lee land a role on «The Green Hornet» (1966-1967), which put him in the spotlight. The two became good friends, and around 1967, Bruce began teaching martial arts to several Hollywood A-listers, including Steve McQueen, Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate. This gave him the highly placed connections and friends he would need to begin his steady ascent in the business. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Bruce’s main accomplishment was to become the first Asian American male actor to star in a Hollywood movie, and at that time he faced insurmountable odds; racism was always a persistent barrier. He was determined from the beginning to become famous, breakdown stereotypes through films, and make Chinese Kung Fu a household name.

Manson had been predicting a race war for some time, but when the Beatles released the White Album in November of 1968, songs such as Revolution 9 and Helter Skelter encapsulated the chaos he foretold, and preparation began. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ “We gotta be ready,” Manson said, “the Beatles are telling it like it is… the blacks are gonna break into the houses of some rich white piggies in beverly hills and start wasting them… then whitey is gonna retaliate… and the war’s gonna start. We’re gonna need vehicles to transport people… dune buggies, motorcycles, and good maps. Their album is getting the young love ready, building up steam… our album is going to pop the cork right out of the bottle.» ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Manson and his Family planned to trigger Helter Skelter through lyrics in their music, and wanted Terry Melcher to produce their album. In March of 1969, Manson went looking for Melcher at his former residence, 10050 Cielo Drive. When Manson was directed to Rudi Altobelli (a talent manager who was staying in the guesthouse), Altobelli informed him that Melcher had moved to Malibu. According to prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi, the next day Sharon Tate asked Altobelli: “Did you see that creepy-looking guy come back there yesterday?” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Frustrated, Manson transitioned from a soft-spoken guru into a general briefing his troops for battle. «Looks like we’re gonna have to show blackie how to do it.» Back at Spahn Ranch, everything was geared toward Helter Skelter. Ranch hands/stuntmen Shorty Shea and Randy Starr (and Cliff Booth?) continued to bad-vibe the Family, but not enough to alter their momentum. «The love thing is over,» Manson said. «It’s Helter Skelter now.»

You know this story: five people murdered over the course of two days that August, shot and stabbed by a clan of hippie impressionables in anticipation of Helter Skelter, Charles Manson’s idea of holy terror.

In 1961, the first professional organization for stuntmen was formed. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Their skills were frequently put to use in action-oriented shows, such as westerns, where horse falls, wagon wrecks, stagecoach jumps, saloon brawls and shootouts were routine. At the time, the basic safeguards on set included mattresses, wooden boards and cardboard boxes, but as the ’60s progressed, technologies such as airbags and air rams were beginning to enter the stunt world. By the end of the decade, changes in the television and film industries meant there was need for advancement in stunt performance, a shift that sent many careers off into the sunset along with the fading TV western.

Tarantino is known for his novelistic scripts and peerless talent for writing dialogue. It’s the best screenplay that I have had the privilege to read.

Producción de ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’…

Once Upon a Time . . . in Hollywood, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a faded TV Western star and Pitt as his stunt double, is, as its sand-battered title suggests, a throwback. For Los Angeles, sure, but also for Tarantino, who, after traveling as far and wide as the Third Reich and the Shaolin Temple, is bringing it home.

In Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Tarantino is mixing real characters with fictional ones and creating an alternate reality in the process. The reality these characters inhabit uses popular images and references from our reality and reimagines them, ultimately creating a hyperreality as the line between the two worlds is blurred. He are some characters from our world that may make an appearence in Tarantino’s version of Hollywood 1969: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Jack Nicholson: At 32 years old he got his big break in Easy Rider (’69), turning him into an overnight hero of the counter culture movement. He was also close friends with Sharon Tate, Roman Polanski, and Robert Evans. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Robert Evans: He was best known at the time for producing Roman Polanski’s box office hit, Rosemary’s Baby (’68). Before police arrived to the murder scene on Cielo Drive, it’s claimed Evans and Nicholson showed up and removed potentially embarrassing items from the property. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Warren Beatty: The success of Bonnie and Clyde (’67) made Beatty a defining figure of the New Hollywood generation. He was often seen chumming around Los Angeles with Nicholson, Evans, and Polanski. He even turned down Rosemary’s Baby because he thought it was «not important enough.» ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Terry Melcher: A music producer during the counter culture era, and a resident of 10050 Cielo Drive prior to the murders. Melcher began visiting Charles Manson at Spahn Ranch in 1969, but was quickly unimpressed by his singing abilities and made it clear he wouldn’t aid Manson on his quest for rock stardom. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Donald «Shorty» Shea: He was a Hollywood actor and stuntman who worked at Spahn Ranch. His dream was to pursue a film career in Hollywood, a dream similar to that of Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth’s… but Shea’s dream ended when he was brutally stabbed and tortured to death by Charles Manson and his disciples for being considered a «snitch.»

More than any other writer of his generation, Tarantino has created a distinct dark universe where he unfolds his stories. What makes his scripts so intriguing is the nature of his screenwriting. To read a Tarantino script is to be exposed to the artful breaking of the textbook «golden rules» of the craft. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ «The way I write my screenplays is like a novelist. I really let the characters do most of the work, I just get them talking to eachother and they lead the way.» – Tarantino ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At CinemaCon in April 2018, DiCaprio called the script for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood «one of the most amazing screenplays he’s (QT) ever written. And that’s saying a lot because he’s done some masterworks in cinema.» ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment Tom Rothman called it “the best script I’ve had the privilege to read.” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tarantino has said that the script is «probably the closest to Pulp Fiction that I’ve done. It really is a Los Angeles movie, and it deals with a couple of lead characters, but there’s a lot of wild supporting characters that make a blanket around the town.»
